Pre-Submission Self-Assessment

Think of Gemini (make sure you are logged into your @asyncacademy.ca Google Workspace account) as a personal, 24/7 peer reviewer. This self-assessment process is designed to help you actively monitor your own progress, evaluate your work against the success criteria, and make conscious decisions about how to refine your communication skills before submitting your final product.

1. Preparing Your Materials

Make sure you have two things ready:

  • Your Work: Your video file, essay draft, or code.
  • The Criteria: Copy the text of the Learning Goals and Success Criteria from the assignment page.

2. Choose Your Prompt

Based on what you are turning in, use one of the prompts below:

Option A: For Video Presentations

I am uploading a video of my presentation on [Topic]. Here are my [Paste Learning Goals and Success Criteria]. Please analyze the video and tell me:

Did I miss any required points from the Learning Goals and Success Criteria?

How is my speaking pace, tone, and eye contact?

Multiple Deliverables: If an assignment has multiple deliverables, you may need to edit the copied text to remove criteria that are not relevant to the specific part you are checking.

3. Self-Monitoring & Reflection

A key part of becoming an independent communicator is learning to critically evaluate feedback, monitor your own progress, and take ownership of your growth. AI feedback is a set of suggestions, not a set of commands: you are the final author and curator of your work.

  • Document the Feedback: Copy Gemini’s response into a Markdown file.
  • Evaluate & Reflect: Read through the suggestions. Determine which recommendations align with the success criteria and your personal learning goals.
  • The "Why" Section (Metacognition): Below the feedback, list the suggestions you chose to implement and, crucially, explain why you chose to ignore others. (e.g., "Gemini suggested I add more visual charts, but because my personal goal for this assignment was to practice engaging oral delivery without relying on slides, I decided to keep the visual format minimal and focus on my pacing instead.")
  • Track Your Growth: Note how this self-assessment helped you identify areas of strength and target areas for improvement in future assignments.
