What Makes a Good Profile? Setting Your Goals

What Makes a Good Profile?

Your Digital Handshake

Your social media profile is often your first "hello" to the world. It is a digital handshake that tells people who you are, what you value, and what you’re capable of. But in a sea of content, what actually makes a profile stand out?

The good news is that you don't need a Hollywood budget to look professional. With a bit of creativity, your smartphone, and the tools we have in Canva, you can produce content that carries real authority and shows off your unique voice.

The Mission: Looking "Under the Hood"

We live in an "attention economy" where everyone is competing for a click. To build your own successful digital presence, we are going to study the pros to see how they capture that attention. By identifying their specific techniques, you can build a roadmap for your own growth.

Step 1: Find Your Inspiration

Choose 3 to 5 content creators who use their platforms for a business or a professional career. Try to pick people who align with your own future aspirations!

  • Interested in the Trades? Find an electrician or a carpenter on TikTok who shares "day in the life" or safety tip videos.
  • Looking at Healthcare or Law? Find a creator who explains complex topics simply and clearly.
  • Love Coding or Tech? Look for creators sharing project tutorials or "build with me" sessions on YouTube.

Step 2: Deconstruct Their Style

Watch their content closely. We want to move past general feelings like "they are funny" and find the specific technical choice they made.

  • Instead of: "They are easy to relate to."
  • Try: "They use a personal 'storytelling' hook in the first 3 seconds to explain a problem they faced."
  • Instead of: "The video looks good."
  • Try: "They use high-contrast Canva overlays and clear captions to make their key points pop."

Step 3: Build Your Success Checklist

Now, it’s time to set your own targets. Using a Canva Checklist template (or a Google Doc/Sheet), create a personal "Growth Plan" for this unit. You need at least three specific goals for each of these categories:

  1. Oral Communication (Speaking & Presenting): Will you focus on your pacing, your tone, or how you maintain "eye contact" with the camera lens?
  2. Writing & Composition: Will you focus on scripting punchy "hooks," using perfect Canadian spelling, or how you structure a 60-second script?
  3. Media Production: Will you focus on your editing rhythm in Canva, your use of professional transitions, or improving your lighting and framing?
