Why Study Literature? (The Pitch)

Why Study Literature? (The Pitch)

More Than Just a Story

Why do we spend time reading long stories? It isn't just about the plot; it is about building high-value skills that employers and communities look for. Whether it is empathy, critical thinking, or understanding complex human motives, literature is like a flight simulator for real life.

In this assignment, you will use AI to help you find a novel that matches your personal goals. Then, you will create a pitch video to convince other students why a novel study is one of the most practical things they can do this year.

Your Production Workflow

Step 1: Partner with AI to Find Your "Why"

Start a conversation with your AI assistant to find a focus that actually matters to you.

  • Skill Discovery: Ask the AI: "What professional or life skills do novel studies help high school students develop?"
  • Personalize It: Once you find a skill you like (e.g., leadership, problem-solving, or communication), ask: "I want to work on [Your Skill]. How can I use a novel study to get better at this?"
  • The Reading List: Tell the AI about your interests and the skill you chose. Ask it to suggest three different novels that would be a great fit for you.

Step 2: The "Expert Pitch" Video

Using Canva Video, create a high-energy "trailer" or pitch for your upcoming novel study. Your goal is to convince a student exactly like you that this work is worth the effort.

  • Make the Argument: Clearly explain how reading a novel can help someone develop those high-value skills you researched.
  • The Nominees: Briefly review the three books on your list. What makes each one a "must-read" for someone with your interests?
  • The Reveal: Announce which book you have chosen as your primary text! Use this as a "teaser" for what's to come.

Step 3: Level Up Your Production

This video is a chance to show me how much you have grown!

  • Check Your Feedback: Look back at the comments I gave you on your Shakespeare or Social Media videos.
  • Apply the Growth: If we talked about your lighting, your eye contact, or your pacing, make sure this video shows a clear improvement in those areas. Try one new Canva transition or element that you haven't used before to keep your media skills expanding!
