Moving Past 5 Paragraphs

Moving Past Five Paragraphs: The Curator's Essay

From Template to Artistry

For a long time, you may have been taught the "Five Paragraph Essay" as the gold standard. While it is a helpful starting point, professional writers and Canadian scholars often use more fluid, engaging structures to prove their points. In this assignment, you will move beyond the template.

You will use an AI assistant to generate several "candidate" essays based on your analysis of Macbeth or your chosen novel, and then you will act as the Lead Editorβ€”selecting, refining, and combining the best elements into a polished final piece.

Step 1: Choosing Your Angle

Before you can write, you need a "lens." Which of these approaches allows you to discuss something you truly care about?

  • Thematic: Connect literary devices (like imagery) to a central theme.
  • Evaluative: How successful was the author in achieving their goal?
  • Contextual: How does the setting or time period reveal something deeper?
  • Comparative: Compare a theme or character across two different texts.
  • Structural: How does the way the story is told (flashbacks, multiple narrators) affect the reader?

Research Phase: Spend 15 minutes jotting down your own thoughts and favorite quotes. Then, use your AI to help supplement that list and find evidence you might have missed.

Step 2: Exploring the Genre

There are many ways to prove a thesis. Use your AI to explore which "genre" fits your argument best. You might choose a Persuasive approach to argue a point, a Literary analysis to dive into the text, or even a Narrative style to weave your argument into a story.

Task: Consult with your AI to find three potential approaches that suit your thesis.

Step 3: Prompt Engineering and Curation

This is where your skill as a "Human-in-the-loop" shines.

  1. Develop Your Prompts: Ask the AI to generate essays using different combinations of the styles and evidence you've gathered.
  2. Iterate: Keep track of your prompts and the AI's outputs in a Google Doc. Aim for 8–10 different versions.
  3. Analyse: Highlight what you like (a great transition, a clever insight) and what you dislike (generic phrasing, repetitive points). Use your findings to "engineer" a better prompt for the next round.

Step 4: The Final Build

Generate 2–3 "finalist" essays. Your job is to take the best parts of each and combine them into one seamless, powerful final product.

Submit a Screencast explaining:

  • Your prompt development process.
  • Why you chose specific arguments or structures over others.
  • The "AI hallucinations" or generic writing you purposely avoided to keep the essay sounding authentic and human.
