Your Professional Portfolio: Building a Digital Brand

Curating Your Success

Imagine you are applying for a role with a local Ontario business, a creative agency in Toronto, or a YouTuber you've followed for years. They don't just want to know that you finished Grade 11 English: they want to see what you can do.

A portfolio is more than a folder of old assignments; it is a polished, professional package that proves you can communicate effectively across different media. In this final task, you will select your best work, refine it, and present it in a way that showcases your unique "creator's voice."

Step 1: Identify Your Niche

Pick 1–3 small businesses or content creators in a field you are passionate about (e.g., local eco-tourism, a tech start-up, or a specialized gaming channel). As you build your portfolio, keep their specific audience in mind. How would your skills help them connect with their followers?

Step 2: The Collection

Select the pieces that represent your absolute best work from this course:

  • Video Variety: Choose examples that show different styles, such as a "talking head" reflection, a creative skit, or a technical screencast.
  • The Polished Essay: Take your "Moving Past 5 Paragraphs" work and ensure it is formatted to professional standards.
  • The Power of Citations: Professionalism requires credibility. You must include correct MLA citations for your research.
    • Works Cited: A dedicated page at the end listing all sources.
    • In-Text Citations: Brief markers in your paragraphs that point to your list.
    • Pro Tip: Use an AI to double-check your formatting, but remember to verify it yourself—AI sometimes gets the small details of MLA wrong!

Step 3: Choose Your Platform

How will you show off your work? While a Google Doc is a start, we recommend using Canva Websites, Google Sites, or another site builder to create a true digital home for your brand. Your portfolio should be easy to navigate, visually clean, and represent the "Secret Sauce" you identified earlier in the unit.

Step 4: The Guided Tour (Screencast)

Record a final screencast where you "walk" a potential employer through your portfolio.

  • Explain why you included each piece.
  • Highlight the process insights you gained: what did you learn about your own creative habits?
  • Discuss your future objectives: what skills are you excited to take into Grade 12 and beyond?
