Reading the Novel: The Creator’s Log

Diving Into the Story

Now that you have selected your novel, it is time to put those high-level pre-reading strategies you sharpened during the Shakespeare unit to work. Before you dive into Chapter One, spend a few minutes using your AI assistant to build a "mental map" of the themes, setting, and character archetypes you might encounter.

Reading a novel is not just about following the plot; it is about studying how a professional writer builds a world. In this assignment, you will act as a literary critic and a content creator, documenting your journey through the book in a series of video diaries.

The Video Diary Series

As you read, you will record five video diaries. Try to space these out evenly—for example, every 50 to 60 pages, or at the end of major parts of the book.

For each entry, please address the following:

1. The "What" (Plot Summary)

  • Give a quick, engaging recap of the major events in this section. If you were explaining this to a friend in line at a Tim Hortons, how would you make it sound exciting?

2. The "How" (Writer's Craft)

  • How is the writer keeping you interested?
  • Identify how a theme is developing, a new side of a character is revealed, or a specific literary device (like a metaphor or cliffhanger) is used to grab your attention.

3. The "Words" (Vocabulary Building)

  • Identify 2–3 sophisticated or rare words from this section.
  • Why did the author choose that specific word instead of a simpler one? How does it change the "mood" of the sentence?

4. The "Takeaway" (Your Creative Growth)

  • The "Steal": Identify one technique the writer used that you want to try in your own future writing or video scripts.
  • The "Skip": Identify something the writer did that you found frustrating or ineffective, and explain why you want to avoid it in your work.

Production Tips

  • Keep it Casual but Clear: These don't need to be over-produced, but make sure your lighting and audio allow us to focus on your insights.
  • Use Canva: Consider using a consistent "Title Overlay" in Canva for each diary entry (e.g., "Diary #1: Chapters 1-5") to keep your files organized.
