Culturally-Significant Stories

Across the world, folk tales have been used for centuries to explain the unknown, pass down traditions, and teach moral lessons. Although these stories emerge from diverse cultures, they often share strikingly similar themes: creation, transformation, or the triumph of good over evil. By comparing myths and folk tales from different cultures, we gain insight not only into the values and beliefs of those societies but also into the universal human experience. This kind of comparison highlights both the uniqueness of individual cultures and the common threads that unite us all.

By identifying the patterns which are common across cultures and times, fictional stories can reveal truths about human psychology and ways to communicate messages that endure.

The Effect of Medium

Prehistoric people are considered "prehistoric" because their culture existed before writing; they only spoke. Eventually, writing was developed, and now we can make videos. Stories (or story structures) that have lasted across time and significant changes in the way we consume them give additional support to the idea that there are ways to connect with people on a deeper level than even regional culture.

Additionally, by studying the same story in different mediums (or media), you have the opportunity to consider what parts of the story are emphasized and which are more difficult to access. By considering the strengths and weaknesses of different mediums, you can choose the best way to communicate your messages in the future.

Assignment

  1. Study at least two folk tales from different cultures. Use an internet service of your choice (e.g. search engine, LLM) to get recommendations for myths or folk tales from a culture you’re interested in, or about a topic that connects with you.
  2. Set goals/expectations of what you will be able to get out of each modality best. Develop your intuition about which medium will best suit your communication situation in the future.
  3. Consume them in three modalities: reading, listening, video. You may need to adjust the specific folk tale if it isn’t available in English in all three formats.
  4. Use the internet to learn about the Hero’s Journey, developed by Joseph Campbell.
  5. Make a video reviewing the plot of your stories in 1-5 sentences and explain:
    • Why do you think the story has endured for so long?
    • What was different about your experience with each medium?
    • Did you use the same strategies to engage with and understand the story every time?
    • How did the culture of the time and place change the way the story was told?
    • What parts of the stories were aligned with the Hero’s Journey, and which ones differed?
