Exam Task

The Careers course is part of the Grade 10 curriculum, but it’s never too early to start thinking about careers that might interest you. In this assignment, you will start to consider how your preferred modes of communication might affect the types of jobs you’re interested in.

Assignment

  1. Investigate three jobs you’re interested in.

    • If you are certain about what you want to do, include it as one option, but try hard to expand your range.
    • If you find other options but still prefer your first choice, you can be more confident in your decision.
    • If you have no idea what you want to do, choose three jobs as different as possible to broaden your options (e.g. underwater welder, accountant, stay-at-home parent).
  2. Make a short list of examples of the types of communication required for each job across the four communication types:

    • Oral Communication
    • Reading
    • Writing
    • Media
    • Provide at least two examples per job.
    • It's okay if the same example appears more than once; for instance, “talking to a supervisor” is often essential in all jobs.
  3. Demonstrate your communication skills.

    • Talk about something in a video recording for Oral Communication.
    • Discuss something complex you have read about that is relevant to your target job for Reading.
    • Write a short (750-word) personal essay or blog post on a related topic for Writing. Use AI if needed, showing your drafting process.
    • Create a social media-style video for Media.
    • These demonstrations won’t be assessed on appearance in Reading or Oral Communication videos, but make sure they are clearly identified when submitting.
  4. Make a video analyzing your findings.

    • Reflect on whether the examples you preferred were from one job or balanced between them.
    • Consider whether you gained new insights about your career interests.
    • Analyze whether certain communication tasks drew you to or repelled you from a job.
    • Understanding which situations are a fit for you is critical.
