Your Masterpiece

Having read a screenplay and watched a production of it, it is now your turn to create something of your own. Rewrite your screenplay as a series of up to 5 social media/TikTok style videos where one person (you) plays all the parts, and film it.

In your last assignment, you broke your screenplay down into the steps of the Hero’s Journey. Group them in a way that allows for logical breaks between videos:

  • Decide the essential elements of the story.
  • Decide how you can tell the whole story. What can you combine/eliminate to keep the focus on the main idea? If there are multiple themes, choose one storyline to follow.
  • Decide if your story has a narrator or is from a third-person point of view.

Adaptation for Audience and Format

  • Decide what will be relevant for your audience. Are you keeping them interested by choosing a theme that connects with them, or making an inaccessible theme relevant by presenting it in a new way?
  • Adapt your screenplay for the format: media is getting shorter. Communicating a meaningful message concisely is challenging.

Writing

Write a screenplay using the one you read as a guide for formatting and appropriate directions. Generally, a minute of video contains about 150 words. Since you’re making approximately 5 videos of 60 seconds each, aim for 500-750 words, including stage directions. Focus on making your first few words unskippable as they are crucial.

Production

Extensive sets are not expected on social media, but you can add elements with effective transitions and overlays to expand your communication techniques.

  • Find a social media creator who makes fictional/dramatic content you like, even if you need to discover someone new. Use their strategies for shooting and editing content.
  • Experiment with different angles for each type of shot.
  • Investigate techniques like β€œthree-point lighting.” You don't necessarily need professional lights; creativity with natural light and available resources works too.

Presentation Skills

Effective creative works create and relieve tension in an audience. Communicate a range of emotions through different characters using the tone of your voice and non-verbal elements.
